1 This research represents a segment of the authorâs broader project on the Indian diaspora in the US. For other discussions, see Skop 2012; Skop and Adams 2009; and Adams and Skop 2008.
2 It is important to note that even though a small subset of individuals is included in this chapter, my results are also informed by in-depth interviews and participant observation done in over ten years of research (see Skop 2012; Skop and Adams 2009; Adams and Skop 2008; Adams and Ghose 2003; Skop 2002).
3 Even though one may be tempted to refer in such a discussion to the âcommunityâ of Indian immigrants living in the US, the term is poorly suited to this population in a way that raises an important issue with regard to this migration stream. Indeed, over a billion people comprise the nation of India â a sixth of the human population, divided into 25 states and speaking some 15 official languages and 200 languages overall. It is not surprising that for many Indians, the nation holds less of a purchase on personal identity than the local state, place, or region, and these smaller foundations of community remain important in diaspora (see recent discussions of Indian migrant diversity in Skop 2012; Sharma 2010; Bhatia 2007; Dhingra 2007). Rather than coalescing to form a single ethnic community in the US, immigrants from India remain segmented into sub-ethnic communities derived from various source regions within India, which give rise to particular linguistic and religious characteristics in particular segments of the population.
4 For more on socioeconomic stratification amongst Indian migrants in the US, see Skop 2012; Sharma 2010; Mathew 2008; Rudrappa 2008.
